MEET OUR CORELLI & HÄNDEL TEAM

Our new CD ‘Corelli & Händel: Encounters in Rome’ has been released! To celebrate this, we want to highlight everyone who collaborated intensively on this project.

We start with  Giulio Quirici (Theorbo & Guitar)

Your first musical steps until …

I grew up in Vicenza, Italy. As a teenager I picked up the guitar as a self-taught, and took it seriously right away. Around the age of 16, I started taking jazz guitar lessons, and during my last year of high school I started attending a Bachelor at the conservatory. I moved abroad, graduated at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and now live with my wife and son in Brussels. I enjoy the city, open and diverse in terms of people and culture.

Your instrument

In this project, I play theorbo and baroque guitar. For other musical contexts I also play electric guitar. The family of lutes and guitars is incredibly kaleidoscopic, and I enjoy experimenting with tunings, sounds and designs. Upon arriving in Belgium, for example, I worked on a soprano guitar prototype together with luthier Pablo Sanchez Otero and recorded my EP “Day One” with that instrument, released during lockdown.

Your collaboration with Musica Gloria

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Musica Gloria is Nele’s energy and joy for music! She and Beniamino make it so that the ensemble strikes a good combination between serious music making, relevant musicological research, but also the light-heartedness and freedom in ensemble playing. It’s great!

Your favourite piece from the cd ‘Encounters in Rome’

It was the first time I played with a claviorganum, and it was a very interesting discovery. So I’d have to pick the organ concerto ‘The Cuckoo and the Nightingale’ (tracks 28-31), because of the interaction the ensemble has with this specific new sound. I was also happy to play such a fun piece as ‘La Follia’ (tracks 13 en 14) together with my friends and particularly with Elise, whose violin playing I am such a big fan of.

A  project of your own which you would like to highlight
